to make health care available at discounted rates. How do they do this? They make incentives available for members to use specified health providers. These practitioners have a contract with the PPO at discount rates. They also cover medical services by health care providers who are outside the PPO network.
Health Maintenance Organizations or HMOs also work with Blue Cross Blue shield to share the financial risks that go along with making medical services available to a volunteer members in a specific area in return for fees that are not only prepaid - but fixed at a certain amount.
When you become a member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield program your primary care physician is your first contact with the plan. Depending on the terms of your membership all family members may be restricted to choosing the same primary care physician.
